Case study
The Chipping Norton Lido approached Planscapes Leisure Ltd amongst outdoor swimming pool specialists to tender for the complete internal finish and refurbishment of the Lido’s 25 metre pool and children’s splash pool.
Although various internal finishes were tendered, Planscapes Leisure Ltd offered Hydrazzo as the best product for the job and were awarded the contract to refurbish the internal finishes and double bull nosed copings to both the children’s splash pool and main 25m x 9m lido pool.
As the previous finish was Marbelite which had not only become badly etched but also having been patched and repaired over the years where areas were hollow, the ultimate choice was to strip out where necessary; re render out to an acceptable face finish; add new tile band and apply the new Hydrazzo and tiles over.
Copings were to be lifted and re laid with a 10mm over sail from the new tile band and polished finish beneath.
Works commenced late November 2014 with a completion date agreed by 20 March 2015.
The time frame agreed was to allow for winter conditions when working with wet applied finishes; laying; setting and curing times. Due to the exposed nature of the site (windswept; typically higher and colder than the local surrounding Cotswold areas) a temporary truss structure was included within the contract to improve working conditions and protection for applied finishes from rain and colder conditions.
Upon initial preparation works which included uplifting copings and cleaning off for re use; removal of tile band and disc cutting relief lines in the old Marbelite and render (to prevent hollows running through the old finish) it was very clear that the pool had at least 4 re surfaces with Marbelite over the last 30 years and indeed the pool shell concrete itself had rotted back to the steel reinforcement over approximately 6% of the structure.
Following our discussions with the Lido’s management a scheme was put forward by Planscapes Leisure Ltd for a much more in depth renovation of not only finishes but structure.
With waiting times on finish choices (as special orders from America), works were finally completed on budget with the pools being filled on 23 March; 3 days beyond the agreed completion date.
Overall the completed works have lifted the whole presentation; feel and benefit of the Lido’s pools for now and many years to come.
